Infiorata Flower festival San gemini
In many Italian cities, on the occasion of the Feast of Corpus Domini, which this year will fall on June 23rd, the streets are filled with splendid masterpieces created with flower petals: the so-called Infiorate.
In San Gemini, takes place one of the most famous Infiorate of Umbria, which has reached its 24th edition.
Every year, there is a theme to follow.
On the Saturday before the Feast of Corpus Domini, the artists sketch the plaster drawing on the street and then fill it with thousands of petals of fresh or dried flowers, creating extraordinary panels, whose construction technique is very similar to that of mosaics and tapestries.
It is a work that engages the citizens for many months, in the collection of flowers and leaves that are then left to dry and shredded. Even School children participate at the Infiorata, and they are allowed to use flowers and other materials.
In addition, the inhabitants of San Gemini created the Group Infioratori San Gemini, registered with the national association “InfiorItalia” and taking part in national events and shows.
The Infiorata draws its origins from the ancient tradition of covering the streets of the village with flowers which were then covered by the Corpus Domini Procession. Even today, the “flower carpets” mark the path of the procession with the following itinerary:
- Start from the Cathedral (Chiesa di Santo Gemine)
- Via Roma
- Piazza San Francesco
- Via Casventino e Piazza Palazzo Vecchio
- Piazza San Giovanni
- Via del Tribunale
- Chiesa di Santa Caterina, and then through Porta del Sale back to Piazza San Francesco
- A part of Via Roma
- Via Campo de’ Fiori
The procession is traditionally opened by children who received First Communion during the year, followed by the Town Band and then by the Civil and Religious Authorities.
